If you have TCP/IP
installed and have a dial-up connection
then you may need to temporarily modify your TCP/IP configuration.
To obtain the IP address for your machine, in Windows95, go
to control panel and click on the network icon. Click on the
Configuration tab and click on one of the TCP/IP protocols.
You may have one associated to your network card and/or one
associated to your dial-up adapter. Select one of them and
click on the properties button. When the next dialog box comes
up, select the IP Address tab. If the 'Obtain an IP address
automatically' item is selected then cancel out of that box
and select the other TCP/IP protocol if you have one. See
if the 'Obtain an IP address automatically' item is selected.
If one of the TCP/IP selections has 'Specify an IP address'
and a set of numbers is in the IP Address box, (you should
also have a set of numbers in the Subnet Mask), that is the
IP address for your machine.
If none of your TCP/IP protocols has an IP address, you will
need to add an IP address to one of them temporarily. Temporarily
means that you will need to have an IP address to run your
Web server locally and you will have to change the box back
to the 'Obtain an IP address automatically' option when you
want to connect to the Internet through your local provider.
If possible, ask your local provider for a permanent IP address,
some providers can give you one. If you can't get one then
use 192.0.1.2 or 192.0.1 3 for your IP address and 255.255.255.0
for your Subnet Mask. You should now be able to install a
Web server as described in the TotalWeb documentation's Appendix
A.
